A STORY OF GOD'S FAITHFULNESS... STILL BEING WRITTEN
AN UPDATE FROM PASTOR JIM
OCTOBER 2017

Since 1946, Highlands Community Church has been a “light on the hill”, sharing the good news of Jesus with our community, leading children, students, and adults to be passionate disciples of Christ. We have been richly blessed by the Lord.

In the entire 70+ year history of our church, we have had only two Lead Pastors! (Pastor Wally Wilson and me). It is with bold faith and expectation that I share with you now, the next chapter for Highlands. Starting in the early months of 2018, we will publicly begin the search process for my successor, the third Lead Pastor of Highlands Community Church. With much prayer and many prior months of planning, our elder board, senior leadership and I have identified this to be the appropriate timing to begin my transition and to engage in this search.

As I look back on nearly 30 years of ministry at Highlands, it is clear to see the faithfulness of God. I am filled with gratitude for the incredible ways He has worked in and through our church family, including story after story of lives transformed by the power of the gospel. I truly believe that the best days of Highlands still lie ahead, as we continue unwaveringly in our commitment to help people find and follow Jesus!

On this page you will find helpful resources, including frequently asked questions, which I encourage you to read over as you process this news and follow along with our Lead Pastor search in the days ahead.

In Christ’s Love,

Pastor Jim

Lamentations 3:22-23 - The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
After nearly 30 years of faithful leadership at HCC, Jim is more excited about the future of Highlands than ever, and is sensing that this is the right timing to transition to the leader who will guide us in the next season of ministry together.
Jim and Lauri love the Renton area, having raised their family and being invested in the community. They are still trying to determine what their next steps will be, but are eager to support God’s next leader at Highlands.
We’re looking for someone who can lead us into reaching the next generation of believers. An excellent Bible teacher, strong leader of leaders, who is passionate for helping people find and follow Jesus. A person who shares HCC’s philosophy of ministry and can continue to champion our effective multi generational ministry. The elders have spent extensive time identifying the DNA and characteristics needed in the next Lead Pastor through careful study and conversations.
God has blessed HCC with excellent godly leaders. The elder board has determined with our pastoral team the need for a national search for the next leader outside of Highlands and are partnering with a well known Christian search firm who specializes in this arena. They will present qualified candidates for us to prayerfully consider.
The elders have been prayerfully defining the process for the last couple years in preparation for this transition. In our context, the elder board is tasked to select the next Lead Pastor of HCC. They will be doing this with input from our search team, staff team, Pastor Jim, key leaders, and our search firm.
We will begin the public search in January of 2018, following the preparation work necessary to start the search. Only the Lord knows the exact timing, but in the meantime Pastor Jim will continue to serve as the Lead Pastor. It is our hope that the new Lead Pastor will be in place by late 2018.
The elders are committed to a positive and healthy transition, and all options are on the table to ensure the smoothest transition and success of the new leader.
In some churches and denominations, there is impact to existing staff, however, the elders of Highlands are committed to our current staff and the continuation of a healthy and vibrant staff team and culture. The Lead Pastor reports to the elder board and works alongside the senior staff team to lead our church.
Please pray for your leaders, for wisdom and discernment.
We will be taking the appropriate time to celebrate Jim and Lauri in the months ahead as well as the leader God brings to us. Interested in serving as part of the event team? Please contact Shannon Luedtke: shannon.luedtke@outlook.com.
