Elder Nominations | 2022

February 17, 2022

Dear Highlands Family,

As you may recall, our Elder Board recently underwent a 100% turnover in 2021, and 10 new lay elders were installed in August to serve the remainder of the 2021/2022 fiscal year (through March 2022). All 10 lay elders have expressed a sense of God's call to continue serving in 2022/2023 alongside Pastor Nate, who is also an elder. We thank God for His provision to our church through these men during a critical time in our church's history.

At the end of each fiscal year, the elders of Highlands ask the congregation to provide nominations of elder-qualified men who God may be calling to serve as elder candidates at our church. An elder candidate is an elder-qualified man who agrees to undergo a 1-year candidacy where he will be intentionally discipled by our existing elders and where he will attend elder meetings as a non-voting member. At the end of this process, his calling will be assessed and, Lord-willing, he will join the elder board as a full member in the following year.

We do not know how many additional men the Lord may call to begin the candidacy process. We believe it is wise to consider perhaps 2-4 men for elder candidacy in 2022/23 in order to ensure that we are intentionally developing a strong pipeline of future leaders for our church.

As members of our church, you have a unique role and responsibility to help us identify these men so that we can interview them and prayerfully consider their nomination. Therefore, we are asking you to do the following:

  1. Pray and consider if there is an elder-qualified man you believe God is calling to serve our congregation as an elder.
  2. This man must meet the character requirements of 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1, and he must also have been an active, serving member of our congregation for at least the last year.
  3. Speak with this man to see if he feels called to serve. If he senses a call from God, please nominate him by Saturday, March 5, by completing this electronic form.

The existing elders will interview prospective candidates, and if a candidate is married, the elders will also interview his wife. We will then prayerfully consider the prospective candidates and our anticipated needs as an Elder Board and will inform each nominated candidate of our decision.

If you have any questions about this process, please contact the elders here. Please also pray that we would submit to the Lord's leading in this process.

In Christ,
Ben Menenberg
Elder Board Chairman
