Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 2 Corinthians 1:3-4
My name is Kent and I have been a member of Highlands Community Church for over six years. This is my story.
In July of 2015 I was experiencing tremendous pain in my hip that made it extremely difficult to walk. The thought of giving up sports was quite distressing but I met with the doctor and it was confirmed that a hip replacement was necessary. In anticipation of my surgery, many negative thoughts entered my mind.
Over time, it became clear to me that God had a plan for me. Psalm 16:11 states, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”
On the Sunday two days prior to my surgery, Pastor Barry along with some of the elders of the church laid hands on my wife and me. Interestingly enough, not one of them prayed for healing but instead for God to be glorified in the process.
Those prayers were very powerful and resonated with me as I lay in the hospital bed. Simply put, God put on my heart to volunteer at the hospital. Prior to the surgery I wouldn’t have considered it and in fact I would have done everything in my power to stay away.
Shortly thereafter, I contacted the volunteer staff at the hospital, and have been helping in the Orthopedics ward ever since. I love volunteering and meeting patients who have had knee or hip replacements. It taught me that God can take away anxieties and provide His greater will and purpose by removing obstacles for His eternal glory. Praise the Lord!
