THE ASTONISHING CLAIMS OF CHRIST
Making statements about oneself is not new. People do it all the time. Mohamed Ali was not shy to state, “I am the greatest!” Barak Obama said, “I can restore hope!” and Donald Trump is confident, “I can make America great again!” Jesus also makes statements about himself but He is different. Every self-claim Jesus makes, He always supports!
For example, in John 6 there are over 5,000, really hungry people without food and Jesus promises, “I am the bread of life!” Then Jesus feeds all 5,000 with enough leftovers for a major late night snack. The crowds are chomping at the bit to follow Him because Jesus can fill their bellies. But here’s what’s astonishing. Jesus says the bread He gives is “bread” that will give life forever (6:51). Wow! That’s astonishing, isn’t it?
If you’re confident Jesus can give you physical bread then you can trust Him to give you real spiritual food too. Right? Wow!
The Bible records seven different times Jesus makes an “I am…” statement. The I AM statements He claims are a declaration that He is God (YHWH). In fact, Jesus claims He’s the great I AM who revealed Himself to Moses. (“I AM sent you.”) In the Gospel according to John, the Apostle John records these seven astonishing claims all backed up by miracles that substantiate Jesus’ divine claims. This month we begin a new series entitled I AM. Each weekend, we will reflect on one of Jesus’ astonishing claims.
