Velma's Story

Proverbs 31:10 Who can find a wife of noble character? She is far more precious than jewels.

On July 4, 2020, one of Highlands Community Church’s original members, a woman of noble character, Velma Evans went home to be with Jesus just three weeks before her 100th birthday.

She seldom missed a church service right up to the end of her long life. Even at 99 years old, she was an active participant in the JOY Group and 60s Plus. Velma truly found a church family at Highlands, and couldn’t walk across the lobby without having several people stop her for a hug and one of her radiant smiles.

Do you have a beloved family member or friend who stubbornly doesn't believe? She'd have understood and encouraged you to keep praying. You don't know what tomorrow holds. Her faithful prayers for her husband’s salvation were answered very shortly before he passed away.

Velma first came to Highlands because a little girl from her neighborhood invited her daughters to Sunday School. After a couple of weeks, Velma thought she had better go and find out what the girls were being taught. HCC’s founding pastor, Wally Wilson, had the children recite John 3:16, and the truth of that beloved Bible verse went straight to her heart. What a beautifully simple start to a legacy that includes children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren who know and love Jesus!
