Highlands family, we’re excited to introduce Nathan Betts as our new Discipleship Pastor! This is a significant step for our church as we work to deepen our focus on evangelism, cultural apologetics, and spiritual formation within our community—and Nathan brings a wealth of experience in these areas.
Note from Nathan : Me and my family are so excited to enter into the faith community here. We have visited Highlands at different points over the last year and we have been inspired by the depth of faith and the feeling of genuine community. Personally speaking, I am looking forward to my role as discipleship pastor. Culturally speaking, we are living during a strange time where some have completely left the faith, while others have deemed it irrelevant. Yet now, many within both of those groups are still searching and looking in and through the church doors to see if there is in fact anything compelling. Discipleship—in a word, becoming more like Christ—has never felt more important. I feel honored to play a part in bringing leadership to the different aspects of discipleship at Highlands. We are looking forward to meeting you and getting to know you.
For the past 15 years, Nathan has traveled globally, speaking and writing about the Christian faith in a way that reflects the beauty and attractiveness of Jesus. He’s engaged in universities, churches, and cultural spaces, helping people wrestle with life’s biggest questions. He holds theology degrees from Tyndale University and the University of London, but what excites him most is walking alongside others in their journey of faith. He and his wife, Brittany, along with their four children are excited to become part of the Highlands family.
As our Discipleship Pastor and leader of our Adult Ministries team, Nathan will focus on:
- Building strong relationships with our adult ministry leaders (community groups, men’s and women’s ministries).
- Exploring the right group and Christian formation model for Highlands—one that fosters community, biblical application, shepherding, and a missionary heart.
- Leading apologetics initiatives for kids, students, and adults to help us think carefully about tough questions and create space for our family, friends, and neighbors to engage in these kinds of conversations with us in a respectful way.
Nathan will begin part-time on April 7 while finishing his commitment to teach this semester at a Christian high school. He will transition to full-time on June 16.
We will be introducing Nathan and his family in our worship gatherings on Sunday March 16. Join us in welcoming Nathan, Brittany, and their kids as they step into this new season with us! We can’t wait to see how God will use Nathan’s leadership to strengthen our church for His mission.
